Car Tyres - Puncture Repairs & Tyre Replacement
Why are tyres so important?
When you are driving whatever the speed or conditions your only contact with the road are the four postcard size of your tyres. With this in mind it is now obvious that these "footprints" should be in the best possible condition in order to ensure the safety of you, your loved ones and others.
What do you look for?
The tyre thread dept is crucial for correct grip in the wet, huge volumes of water on the surface of the road have to be squeezed out by the tread grooves, so it is important to have as much tread depth as possible to displace as much water as possible. A new tyre has 8mm of thread depth and the legal limit is 1.6mm, however it should be noted that a tyre with 3mm tread depth which is the recommended minimum will take twice the distance to stop in the wet than a new tyre.
8mm | Your tyre is 0% worn |
7mm | Your tyre is 15% worn |
6mm | Your tyre is 31% worn |
5mm | Your tyre is 47% worn |
4mm | Your tyre is 62% worn |
3mm | Your tyre is 78% worn |
2mm | Your tyre is 94% worn |
1.6mm | Your tyre is 100% worn |
